It seems that Affiliate Programs to prove that you can make money online if you are willing to put the effort in. Sure, there will be people who try it and give up saying that it doesn't work and therefore not to try it. However, for every person who fails with Affiliate Marketing, there has to be at least one who succeeds. They may not make a huge amount of money but they might make some. For people like myself, the first dollar I made was a catalyst for the next. Affiliate Marketing for some is known as Referral Programs. They are virtually 100% commission based, and payable upon a sale rather than just a lead although there are affiliate programs which do pay based on leads.
By referring a website to the visitors to your website, any sale that is made on the target site, you will make a portion of money (the commission). You can seriously benefit with large amounts of commission and the merchant will also benefit from the sale that you have helped to refer. For some, they may already have a website but are not making money from it - ie it is not their primary aim in administering the site. However, if it is an informative site which gets a fair amount of daily traffic, you can still place Google ads to make some money "on the side". In this example, you are just providing a small revenue stream and not relying on just one merchant or recommending something that you are not happy with in the first place. Alternatively, you can simply build a website and do all the sales and transactions yourself if you are happy with a product. At least you can keep all of the money and not have to worry about 'dodgy' merchants.
Dodgy merchants do exist, although they aren't as common as before. If you decide to choose Affiliate Marketing to help make you some money online, you need to be careful in your choice of affiliate program and merchant running the program. Ultimately, one of the biggest benefits with an affiliate program is that you have a proven and tested method of making money online. The commissions tend to be administered through a third party such a Clixgalore or ClickBank and rather than being the sole administer for the product it will be the responsibility of someone else to ensure the customer receives what they intended. Referrals through Affiliate Marketing have to be one of the easiest and simplest ways to make money online if you don't want to get involved with the 'after sales service'. Temptation can also be in programs that offer the highest commissions, however they may not always be the most profitable in the long run and they may not be the most suitable for your website.
Some affiliates follow rules when they start creating a website to make them money. Here are some that seem very common based on the research that I have done previously.
1. Ensure that there is level support for the customer and the affiliate. If they can't provide what they promise to you, then chances are they won't provide it to the customer also. Therefore, wasted future sales.
2. 25 - 50% commission to the affiliate is the lowest. Most merchants offer around 75% - remember, you're the one getting the customer in the first place and you want to make sure that you get a good commission for your efforts.
3. Vary your choices and don't be afraid to research the merchant. What can they offer the customer, what sort of tools and help can they provide to you, are their graphics and banners eye catching?
4. How often can you get paid and what are the limits. Although this tends to be done by a third party, you don't want to get paid after generating $1,000 of sales. And the frequency? Monthly, weekly, maybe quarterly?
5. Statistics. Look for them, ask for them. What are the merchant's conversion rates like and can they provide you with yours for their product. It's always good to see how you're getting on with a product to determine if it is effective.
Before choosing a merchant, ensure that you will be happy with them. Affiliate Marketing done correctly can make you some good money online, as well as making the merchant some good money. Therefore, you need to make sure that the merchant will do what they are expected to do and that you can deliver. If you're not happy with the merchant, then don't choose them and find one that you are going to be happy with. If you are just beginning your Affiliate business, you need to trust your instincts and use common sense. Try not to rush into things and agreements with merchants because they are offering good incentives to join their group. Research them thoroughly and once you become more and more familiar with how this Affiliate Marketing business works, then not only will you start seeing returns to your time and efforts, but maybe you'll be in a position to become a merchant yourself and utilising other Affiliates to help make you more money online.
